Tanzania RWENZORI MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK
Known as Mountains of the Moon, the Rwenzori Mountains lie along the Uganda’s western border. The park protects the highest part of the 120 km-long, 65 km wide range. With snow peaks this equatorial mountain range is a UNESCO World Heritage Site (United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization siting areas of special cultural or physical significance.) since 1994.
Mt. Rwenzori is Africa’s 3rd highest mountain higher even than the Alps. The mountain is known for botany, being one of the most beautiful in the world.
The park is home to 70 species of mammals including the forest elephant, chimp, hyrax, black and white colobus monkey, L’hoest’s monkey. The 217 variety of birds include the Rwenzori Turaco. Finally, the park is home to some of the world’s rarest vegetation.
The Rwenzori Mountains National Park also offers world class hiking and mountaineering. For those wanting a less strenuous adventure there is Bakonzo village which offers nature walks, homestead visits, and cultural performances.
