QUEEN ELIZABETH  NATIONAL PARK

Queen Elizabeth National Park was founded in 1952 as Kazinga National Park, but was renamed in 1954 to commemorate a visit by Queen Elizabeth.  This park covers a 1,978 square km (764 square mi.) area which spans the equator.

Queen Elizabeth is the most visited park in Uganda due, in part, to the diverse ecosystem.  Here you will find vast savanna, shady, humid forests, sprawling lakes, and fertile wetlands.  There are more than 600 species of birds, 95 animals, and 10 variety of primate.

The Kazinga Channel, which connects Lake George and Lake Edward, is within the park.  Along its banks you will see hippos, buffaloes, elephants, and crocodiles. Another attraction is Lake Katwe, a volcanic cone where salt extraction is done.

On the Ishasha plains the rare tree climbing lions lounge on the branches of fig trees.  These lions can be spotted by their characteristic black manes.
