MGAHINGA  GORILLA  NATIONAL  PARK

The name, “Mgahinga” comes from “Gahinga”, a local word for piles of volcanic stones cleared from the farmland.  The park was designated a game sanctuary in 1930 and upgraded to a National Park in 1991.  Mgahinga was created to protect the mountain gorilla and the endangered golden monkey living inside the park’s boundary.

Within the park are 3 conical extinct volcanoes which are part of the Virunga.  This range lies between Uganda, Congo, and Rwanda.  Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is part of the much larger Virunga Conservation Area which is biologically diverse with many ecosystems.
