MURCHISON FALLS NATIONAL  PARK

This national park is located in the north-west of Uganda at the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley.  The park was named for the president of the Royal Geographical Society.  Murchison is an IUCN category II national park (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and is the largest and oldest conservation area in Uganda.  Within the park there are 76 species of mammals and 451 varieties of birds.

The centerpiece of the park is the mighty Murchison Falls, the world’s most powerful waterfall.  After the Nile River tumbles over the rocks and cliff making up the falls it then becomes a quiet river flowing into Lake Albert.  Regulars at the riverbank are elephants, giraffes, buffaloes, hippopotamus, Nile crocodiles and aquatic birds.

INTERESTING FACT:  In 1951 “The African Queen” starring Humphrey Bogart, was filmed in Lake Albert and on the  River Nile in Murchison Falls National Park.
