MOUNT ELGON NATIONAL PARK
Located in north east Uganda on the border of Uganda and Kenya. 1110 square km in Uganda and 169 square km in Kenya. The park is protected by both Uganda and Kenya creating a trans-boundary conservation area. This is the oldest and largest solitary volcanic mountain in East Africa with a 4,000 square km base making it the largest volcanic base in the world. Mt. Elgon has been declared an UNESCO Man and Biosphere Reserve (United Nations Educational and Cultural Organization for areas with special cultural or physical significance).
Mount Elgon National Park is home to elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, forest monkeys, and a variety of other mammals. Also within the park are more than 300 species of bird including eastern bronze napped pigeon, lemon dove, dusky-turtle dove, African hill babbler, Alpine Chat, mountain yellow warbler, thick billed honey guide and the gray cuckoo shrike.
