Amboseli National Park

Amboseli national park covers an area of 392 square kilometers and was gazetted in 1974. It is located 140 kilometres south of Nairobi. The park is made up of mixed landscape of plains, acacia woodland, rocky thorn bush, swamps and marshes. The Masai are the major local people living around the area though people from other parts of the country settled there due to the success of tourism and agriculture in the region. Amboseli is a habitat for a variety of wildlife including animals like lions, zebras, cheetahs, wildebeests, hyenas, the African elephants, giraffes, Cape buffalos, impalas, to mention but a few. It is also home to over 400 bird species including hammerkops, kingfishers, water birds, pelicans, crakes, and 47 types of raptor. Attractions in the park include; Big Five, the large herds of Elephants (over 900 African elephants live there), Mt. Kilimanjaro (the park is located at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro), Observation Hill, and the Swamp below observation hill. The best time for game viewing in the park is the warm dry season from July to October.
