Lake Nakuru National Park
Lake Nakuru National Park was gazetted in 1961 and covers an area of 188 square kilometers. It is situated around Lake Nakuru south of Nakuru Town, in Central Kenya 150 kilometers north-west of Nairobi. The park was created to protect its huge flock of the lesser flamingos and provide sanctuary for endangered species like Rhinos. It is best known for its thousands, sometimes millions of flamingos nesting along the shores. The park’s ecosystem comprises of the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands with a wide ecological diversity. It supports a wide ecological diversity with Flamingos and other water birds being the major attractions of the area. There are 56 different species of mammals including white rhinos, buffaloes, black rhinoceros, lion, leopard, the rare Rothschild’s giraffe, hippos, clawless otters, waterbuck, black and white colobus monkeys, large sized pythons, elands, steinbok, impala, chandler’s reedbuck, rock hyrax, klipspringer and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 species. Attractions include a number of flamingoes on the lake, Baboon Cliff, a sanctuary to protect Rothschild giraffes.
